Stephen Karam joined the World Bank in 1996 and is currently Sector Leader for the Sustainable Development Group in Turkey, which addresses mainly Infrastructure Sectors including Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Transport, Urban/Rural Development, Water and Sanitation and Social Development. Prior to his assignment in Turkey, he served as Lead Urban Economist in the Sustainable Development Department of the Europe and Central Asia Region. At the corporate level, he worked in the global Finance, Economics and Urban Development Department where he was responsible for leading preparation of the Bank’s Urban & Local Government Strategy (2010). Prior to this he worked in the Urban and Transport Unit of the Middle East and North Africa Region of the Bank from 2002-7 where he led the preparation of analytical work and investment projects addressing local economic development, municipal finance, and sustainable development. He holds an MPP in Policy Analysis and an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago.
