TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS TO CREATE LIVABLE CITIES [PDF]

Michael holds a diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the TechnicalUniversity in Berlin (1984). In his professional career, Michael has always worked on the link between urban development, transport strategies and urban lifestyle.

Having worked in Berlin and Cologne, he started at the City of Bremen in 1990. Since 1994 he has been responsible for sustainable mobility and for many internationally recognised model projects on sustainable transport and environmentally-friendly mobility. Key project elements are the promotion of integrated sustainable transport modes with public transport, taxi, cycling and Car-Sharing – and its integration with urban development.

With this concept, Bremen was selected as showcase at the 2010 World Exhibition in Shanghai. The strategy was awarded with the German Transport Planning Award (2010) and the ‘European Sustainable Energy Award’ (2013). Bremen became also finalist for the IDTP Sustainable Transport Award 2013 (TRB Washington). In 2014, Bremen won the CIVITAS Award of the EU CIVITAS initiative (for public participation) and in 2015 the European SUMP Award.
